Psyllium fiber is derived from the husks of the Plantago Ovata (Desert Indian Wheat) plant. It is a great source of soluble dietary fiber and its heart healthy attributes make it an ideal primary ingredient in laxatives, colon cleansers and even cereals. The American Dietetic Association recommends that adults get about 20-35g of fiber a day. Unfortunately, we only get about half of that. The reason for such a high recommendation is that psyllium has so many positive effects on our health and our bodies. It can help to rid our bodies of toxins and parasites, reduce our risk of cholesterol and heart disease, help us lose weight and even reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Here are just some of the ways that psyllium husk fiber and organic herbs can help you live healthier!
Irregular Bowel Functions
Psyllium has been used by doctors and hospitals for constipation and diarrhea for decades. For constipation, psyllium fiber increases stool weight and number of BM's a day. For adults with diarrhea, psyllium has been used to counter the oily discharge effects of many weight loss medicines. The same BM weight increase that assists those with constipation also helps those with diarrhea.
Preparing for Colonoscopy
Because psyllium husk is such a superior treatment for irregularity, it can be taken a few days prior to a colonoscopy to help alleviate constipation and cleanse any obstructions.
Fiber, particularly psyllium, has been proven to lower low-density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol) with consistent use in just eight weeks. It doesn't have the same effect on good cholesterol (high-density) or triglycerides, which is beneficial since those types of cholesterol promote good heart health and help to balance the bad cholesterol.
Psyllium fiber has been known to help regulate blood pressure, assist with weight loss, (see below,) diabetes and other kinds of heart disease. Psyllium has heart-healthy effects for children as well as adults and is safe if taken as directed.
Fat Excretion, Weight Loss and Obesity
Psyllium husk aids weight loss in more than one way. First, it increases the amount of fat that is excreted through bowel movements. Second, in children and adults it has been known to improve the body's metabolism and processing of glucose. Glucose can be stored as fat if humans don't burn it off and/or have good metabolism. Psyllium also helps to reduce bloating (water retention) and rid the body of wastes that can collect in the colon. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
For many people who live with Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, psyllium can help to flush feces out of the body and regulate bowel functions. This is usually highly recommended by healthcare practitioners for patients with mild to moderate IBS or IBD.
High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycemia)
Psyllium fiber, when taken with or just before a meal, can actually reduce blood sugar levels in adults. In these tests blood sugar levels were reduced almost immediately, but there was also a long-term effect as well.
Psyllium is used in many colon cleansing products and is a highly effective ingredient. An incredibly effective form of psyllium husk, called Psyllimax, was developed by DrFloras and is used in that Colon Cleaner. Most health professionals recommend colon cleansing about 1-4 times a year to maintain good colon health.
Other known benefits of psyllium (and Psyllimax) fiber include fighting and preventing parasites, abscesses in the colon, urethritis, aiding in the calming of Crohn's disease and diverticular disease flare-ups and even help to prevent colon cancer. There are also more spices to chose with.
